Recommended FreeRDP Version with Support for "Display Update"

Omar Sandoval
Hello,

Has anyone been able to set up Guacamole with support for the "Display Update" virtual channel? Is there a recommended FreeRDP version? I was able to find this version from this post late last year. Is this version still recommended? If it is, will I need to rebuild guacd with the ca1cec6 commit of FreeRDP?

Any help is appreciated.

Thank you so much,
Omar

NeutrinoLabs develops Freerdp I believe and they have a github site so maybe check there.  There is also a freerdp wiki if you do a google... that lets you download latest & gives good documentation on the cli cmd & options

For anyone curious about this feature: I was able to get it working with ca1cec6. You just need to clone that particular commit and build/install it as described in the FreeRDP wiki. Sorry for spamming this list about this feature. I should have just tried it from the get go.

This will likely sound like a really stupid question, but here we go anyway...  How does one go about building version ca1cec6 by following the instructions from the FreeRDP wiki?

Is there a particular step you're having problem with?

No not any one particular step.  I think just overall I am a little confused on the process.  For example, if I execute these steps (as outlined on the Wiki) would I be installing the correct version of ca1cec6?  How do I check what version got installed?

git clone git://github.com/FreeRDP/FreeRDP.git
cd FreeRDP
cmake -DCMAKE_BUILD_TYPE=Debug -DWITH_SSE2=ON .
make
make install

Re: Recommended FreeRDP Version with Support for "Display Update"

Omar Sandoval
No, you would be installing from the most recent commit in the master branch. You need to clone the FreeRDP repo and create a new branch with the ca1cec6 commit.

So,

git clone git://github.com/FreeRDP/FreeRDP.git
cd FreeRDP
git checkout -b temp ca1cec6
You could also download ca1cec6 directly from GitHub as a ZIP archive.

Oh, now that makes a lot more sense.  Thank you.

After I build it on the server with 'make install' do I need to rebuild the guacamole server?

Also, when I first setup the server (initially) I installed the Debian package libfreerdp-dev.  Do i need to remove/purge that package after building FreeRDP from the git source?

Yes. You'll need to rerun ./configure, so that the build takes note of the different version of FreeRDP, and then rerun make and make install.

I would also recommend doing a make clean first, to ensure that the past build is cleaned up.

The API of each release of FreeRDP is drastically different, and a decent majority of Guacamole's configure script is devoted to detecting the different versions, enabling/disabling sections of Guacamole's RDP build as a result. Things will not build correctly, if at all, if you do not rerun configure.

Also, when I first setup the server (initially) I installed the Debian package libfreerdp-dev.  Do i need to remove/purge that package after building FreeRDP from the git source?

Yes. In fact, I would recommend removing both libfreerdp-dev and libfreerdp prior to building FreeRDP from git.
